On Sunday, June 16, 2011, I met with some of the top medical professionals who have made the connection between Viagra and a very popular disease called benign prostatic hyperplasia, and I had the pleasure to meet with Dr. Robert D. Hulshof, who I met during his visit to the National Institutes of Health.
“I used to work at Pfizer’s medical office in New York City,” says Dr. Hulshof, “and I was one of the first people I saw when I walked into their office.”
When I arrived at Pfizer’s office, the next day, I told them about my visit to the National Institutes of Health.
I explained that I was visiting a group of men with enlarged prostates, and I was having trouble getting an erection. “I went to the men’s clinic and asked them about their history,” says Dr. Hulshof, “because I saw many of the men who had been told to go to Pfizer’s office.”
After a few minutes of explaining, Dr. Hulshof told me that a few years ago, he was told that the prostate surgery was a problem, but not one that had a big impact on him.
“I told him that the men who suffered from it, and they had to undergo their own surgery, had a very large prostatic volume because their prostate had been enlarged and that the surgery made the prostate volume very large,” says Dr. Hulshof, who has performed over two dozen prostate surgery procedures for over 25 years.
“So my visit to the men’s clinic was a bit of a surprise because they were very surprised at the size of the prostate. There was a very large prostate, and you’d have to go into the urology department and perform a urinary tract operation to open the prostate, and I remember they were very surprised at that,” he says.
